5th Sunday in Ordinary Time A

First Reading Isaiah 58:7-10

A reading from the Book of Isaiah.

The Lord says:

Share your food with everyone who is hungry; share your home with the poor and homeless.

Give clothes to those in need; don't turn away your relatives.

Then your light will shine like the dawning sun, and you will quickly be healed.

Your honesty will protect you as you advance, and the glory of the LORD will defend you from behind.

When you beg the LORD for help, he will answer, "Here I am!"

Don't mistreat others or falsely accuse them or say something cruel.

Give your food to the hungry and care for the homeless.

Then your light will shine in the dark; your darkest hour will be like the noonday sun.

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial psalm

People: A good person is like a light for others.

Second reading 1 Cor 2:1-5

A reading from the First Letter of St Paul to the people of Corinth.

Brothers and sisters,

When I came and told you the mystery that God had shared with us, I didn’t use big words or try to sound wise.

In truth, while I was with you, I decided to speak only about Jesus Christ, Who had been nailed to a cross.

At first I was weak and trembling (shaking) with fear. When I talked with you or preached, I didn’t try to prove anything by sounding wise. I simply let God’s (Holy) Spirit show His power. That way you would have faith because of God’s power and not because of human wisdom.

The Word of the Lord.

Gospel Reading

St Matthew (5:13-16)

Jesus said to His friends, You are like salt for everyone on earth. But if salt no longer tastes like salt, how can it make food salty? All it is good for is to be thrown out and walked on.

You are like light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, and no one would light a lamp and put it under a clay pot. A lamp is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house. Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do and will praise your Father in heaven.

The Good News of the Lord.

3rd Sunday of Advent A

First Reading Isaiah 35:1-6, 10

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

Thirsty deserts will be glad; barren lands will celebrate and blossom with flowers. Deserts will bloom everywhere and sing joyful songs. They will be as majestic as Mount Lebanon, as glorious as Mount Carmel or Sharon Valley. Everyone will see the wonderful splendor of the LORD our God.

Here is a message for all who are weak, trembling, and worried:

"Cheer up! Don't be afraid. Your God is coming to punish your enemies. God will take revenge on them and rescue you."

The blind will see, and the ears of the deaf will be healed. Those who were lame will leap around like deer; tongues once silent will begin to shout.

The people the LORD has rescued will come back singing as they enter Zion. Happiness will be a crown they will always wear. They will celebrate and shout because all sorrows and worries will be gone far away.

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial psalm

Reader: Come, Lord, save us.

People: Come, Lord, save us.

Reader: The Lord is faithful for ever. God is fair to people who are oppressed. God gives food to the hungry.

People: Come, Lord, save us.

Reader: The Lord helps blind people see and helps everyone with a heavy burden.

People: Come, Lord, save us.

Reader: The Lord protects strangers and widows.

People: Come, Lord, save us.

Second reading James 5:7-10

A reading from the Letter of St James.

My friends, be patient until the Lord returns. Think of farmers who wait patiently for the spring and summer rains to make their valuable crops grow. Be patient like those farmers and don't give up. The Lord will soon be here! Don't grumble about each other or you will be judged, and the judge is right outside the door.

My friends, follow the example of the prophets who spoke for the Lord. They were patient, even when they had to suffer.

The Word of the Lord.

A reading from the Good News by St Matthew

(11:2-11)

John (the Baptist) was in prison when he heard what Christ was doing. So John sent some of his followers to ask Jesus, "Are you the one we should be looking for? Or must we wait for someone else?"

Jesus answered, "Go and tell John what you have heard and seen. The blind are now able to see, and the lame can walk. People with leprosy are being healed, and the deaf can hear. The dead are raised to life, and the poor are hearing the good news. God will bless everyone who doesn't reject me because of what I do." As John's followers were going away, Jesus spoke to the crowds about John:

What sort of person did you go out into the desert to see? Was he like tall grass blown about by the wind? What kind of man did you go out to see? Was he someone dressed in fine (expensive) clothes? People who dress like that live in the king's palace. What did you really go out to see? Was he a prophet? He certainly was. I tell you that he was more than a prophet. In the Scriptures God says about him, "I am sending my messenger ahead of you to get things ready for you." I tell you that no one ever born on this earth is greater than John the Baptist. But whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John.

The Good News of the Lord.

2nd Sunday of Advent A

First Reading Isaiah 11:1-10

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

Like a branch that sprouts from a stump, someone from David's family will someday be king.

The Spirit of the LORD will be with him to give him understanding, wisdom, and insight.

He will be powerful, and he will know and honor the LORD. His greatest joy will be to obey the LORD.

This king won't judge by appearances or listen to rumors. The poor and the needy will be treated with fairness and with justice.

His word will be law everywhere in the land, and criminals will be put to death.

Honesty and fairness will be his royal robes. Leopards will lie down with young goats, and wolves will rest with lambs. Calves and lions will eat together and be cared for by little children. Cows and bears will share the same pasture; their young will rest side by side. Lions and oxen will both eat straw.

Little children will play near snake holes. They will stick their hands into dens of poisonous snakes and never be hurt.

Nothing harmful will take place on the LORD's holy mountain. Just as water fills the sea, the land will be filled with people who know and honor the LORD.

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial psalm

Reader: God will give justice and peace.

People: God will give justice and peace.

Reader: God, teach the king to judge rightly. Let the king judge poor people fairly.

People: God will give justice and peace.

Reader: God’s justice and peace will spread. God will rule from sea to sea.

People: God will give justice and peace.

People: God will give justice and peace.

Reader: Like the sun, God will live and reign for ever. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

People: God will give justice and peace.

Second reading Rom 15: 4-9

A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the people of Rome. (Rom 15:4-9)

The Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope. God is the one who makes us patient and cheerful. I pray that he will help you live at peace with each other, as you follow Christ. Then all of you together will praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Honor God by accepting each other, as Christ has accepted you. I tell you that Christ came as a servant of the Jews to show that God has kept the promises he made to their famous ancestors. Christ also came, so that the Gentiles would praise God for being kind to them. It is just as the Scriptures say,

"I will tell the nations about you, and I will sing praises to your name."

The Word of the Lord.

A reading from the Good News by St Matthew (3: 1-12)

John the Baptist started preaching in the desert of Judea. He said, "Turn back to God! The kingdom of heaven will soon be here." John was the one the prophet Isaiah was talking about, when he said, "In the desert someone is shouting, `Get the road ready for the Lord! Make a straight path for him.' "

John wore clothes made of camel's hair. He had a leather strap around his waist and ate grasshoppers and wild honey. From Jerusalem and all Judea and from the Jordan River Valley crowds of people went to John. They told how sorry they were for their sins, and he baptized them in the river.

Many Pharisees and Sadducees also came to be baptized. But John said to them:

You snakes! Who warned you to run from the coming judgment? Do something to show that you have really given up your sins. And don't start telling yourselves that you belong to Abraham's family. I tell you that God can turn these stones into children for Abraham. An ax is ready to cut the trees down at their roots. Any tree that doesn't produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into a fire.

I baptize you with water so that you will give up your sins. But someone more powerful is going to come, and I am not good enough even to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His threshing fork is in his hand, and he is ready to separate the wheat from the husks. He will store the wheat in a barn and burn the husks in a fire that never goes out.

The Good News of the Lord.

1st Sunday of Advent, Year A

First Reading Isaiah 2:1-5

(Note to reader: do not read the above.)

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

This is the message that I was given about Judah and Jerusalem: In the future, the mountain with the LORD's temple will be the highest of all.

It will reach above the hills; every nation will rush to it. Many people will come and say, "Let's go to the mountain of the LORD God of Jacob and worship in his temple."

The LORD will teach us his Law from Jerusalem, and we will obey him. He will settle arguments between nations.

They will pound (beat) their swords and their spears into rakes and shovels; they will never make war or attack one another.

People of Israel, let's live by the light of the LORD.

The Word of the Lord.

People: Let us go to God’s house.

Second reading Rom 13:11-14

(Note to reader: do not read the above.)

A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the people of Rome.

You know what sort of times we live in, and so you should live properly. It is time to wake up. You know that the day when we will be saved is nearer now than when we first put our faith in the Lord. Night is almost over, and day will soon appear. We must stop behaving as people do in the dark and be ready to live in the light. So behave properly, as people do in the day. Don't go to wild parties or get drunk or be vulgar or indecent. Don't quarrel or be jealous. Let the Lord Jesus Christ be as near to you as the clothes you wear. Then you won't try to satisfy your selfish desires.

The Word of the Lord.

GOSPEL READING

A reading from the Good News by St Matthew (24:37-44)

Jesus said to His disciples, When the Son of Man appears, things will be just as they were when Noah lived. People were eating, drinking, and getting married right up to the day that the flood came and Noah went into the big boat (ark). They didn't know anything was happening until the flood came and swept them all away. That is how it will be when the Son of Man appears. Two men will be in the same field, but only one will be taken. The other will be left. Two women will be together grinding grain, but only one will be taken. The other will be left. So be on your guard! You don't know when your Lord will come. Homeowners never know when a thief is coming, and they are always on guard to keep one from breaking in. Always be ready! You don't know when the Son of Man will come.

The Good News of the Lord.

CHRIST THE KING, LAST SUNDAY, Year C

First Reading 2 Samuel 5:1-3

(Note to reader: do not read the above.)

A reading from the Second Book of Samuel.

Israel’s leaders met with David at Hebron and said,

‘We are your close relatives. Even when Saul was king, you led our nation in battle. And the Lord promised that someday you would rule Israel and take care of us like a shepherd.’

During the meeting, David made an agreement with the leaders, and asked the Lord to be their witness. Then the leaders poured olive oil on David’s head to show that he was now the king of Israel.

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial psalm

(Note to reader: do not say/sign ‘Responsorial psalm’ or ‘Our response will be…’ Just read/sign the response below. Then the people will repeat it. Commentator/speaking reader, do not say ‘Repeat’ after each verse.)

People: Let us go to the house of the Lord.

Second reading Col 1:15-18.

(Note to reader: do not read the above.)

A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the people of Colossus.

Brothers and sisters:

I pray that you will be grateful to God for letting you have part in what he has promised his people in the kingdom of light. God rescued us from the dark power of Satan and brought us into the kingdom of his dear Son, who forgives our sins and sets us free.

Christ is exactly like God, Whom we cannot see. He is the first-born Son, superior to all creation. He created everything, everything in heaven and on earth, everything we can see and cannot see, all forces and powers, all rulers and authorities. God’s Son created everything and everything was made for Him.

God’s Son is before (in time) everything else that is (exists) and holds everything together.

God’s Son is the head of the body, which is the Church. He is the very beginning, the first to be raised from death, so that He would be above all others. And God was pleased for him to make peace by sacrificing his blood on the cross, so that all beings in heaven and on earth would be brought back to God.

The Word of the Lord.

A reading from the Good News by St Luke (23:35-43)

While the crowd stood there watching Jesus, the soldiers gambled for his clothes. The leaders insulted him by saying, "He saved others. Now he should save himself, if he really is God's chosen Messiah!"

The soldiers made fun of Jesus and brought him some wine. They said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!"

Above him was a sign that said, "This is the King of the Jews."

One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, "Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!"

But the other criminal told the first one off, "Don't you fear God? Aren't you getting the same punishment as this man? We got what was coming to us, but he didn't do anything wrong." Then he said to Jesus, "Remember me when you come into power!"

Jesus replied, "I promise that today you will be with me in paradise."

Second reading 2 Thess 3:7-12

A reading from the Second Letter of St Paul to the people of Thessalonika.

Brothers and sisters:

You know that you should follow our example. We don’t waste time and we don’t take food without paying for it. We worked as hard as we could, day and night, so that we would not be a burden to anyone.

We had the right not to work, but we wanted to be an example for you. We also taught you, ‘If you don’t work, you don’t eat.’

Now we learn that some of you refuse to work, except the work of a busybody. So, for our Lord Jesus Christ, we ask these people to start working for a living.

The Word of the Lord.

GOSPEL READING

A reading from the Good News by St Luke (21:5-19)

Some people were talking about the beautiful stones used to build the Temple and about the gifts placed in the Temple. Jesus said, ‘Do you see these stones? The time is coming when they will all be knocked down.’

Some people asked, Teacher, when will this happen? How can we know? Jesus answered, ‘Don’t believe men who will come and say they are Me. They will say, “I am Christ!” and “Now is the time!” Don’t follow them. When you hear about wars and riots, don’t be afraid. These things have to happen first, but that is not the end. Nations will go to war against one another, and kingdoms will attack each other. There will be great earthquakes and in many places people will die of hunger and suffer terrible diseases. They will see many frightening things in the sky.

‘Before all these things happen you will be arrested and punished. You will be tried in the synagogues and put in jail. Because of me you will be tried by kings and governors. But this will be the chance to tell about your faith.

‘Don’t worry about what you will say to defend yourselves. I will give you the wisdom to know what to say. None of your enemies will be able to oppose you or say that you are wrong.

‘You will be betrayed by your own parents, brothers, family and friends. Some of you will be killed. Because of me, everyone will hate you. But don’t worry! You will be saved by being faithful to Me.’
